Carolina Panthers quarterback Andy Dalton accidentally sacked himself in a blooper for the ages during yesterday’s preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns.
The main story of the Panthers-Browns preseason contest was the electrifying debut of rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders. The 23-year-old started the game for the visitors, throwing for 138 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-10 victory.
Both teams, of course, mainly played their backups in the preseason opener. That meant valuable playing time for Andy Dalton, who inadvertently sacked himself after a pump fake attempt went awry:

Adin Huntington was credited with the takedown on Andy Dalton, though the official scorekeepers may as well give each of them half a sack.
Carolina will get a full week off before visiting the Houston Texans in their second preseason game next Saturday.
Dalton and the Panthers agreed to a two-year contract extension worth up to $8 million in the offseason, including $6 million in guarantees. The former Cincinnati Bengals star served as Bryce Young’s backup in 2023 and 2024.
Andy Dalton briefly took over as the starting QB last year in favor of a struggling Young. He started five games before suffering a right thumb injury in a car accident, forcing Carolina to go back to Young. The No. 1 pick of 2023 played well from there to lock down the starting job for the rest of the season.
