The Panthers have extended the contract of defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, as head coach Dave Canales told reporters on Sunday (via Joe Person of The Athletic). Canales did not offer details on the length of the deal, but Evero is staying in Charlotte.

Evero, 45, has been with the Panthers since 2023, one year before Canales’ arrival. Although new head coaches generally prefer to bring in their own coordinators, Canales noted at the outset that he hoped to retain Evero. As such, Carolina blocked Evero from taking defensive coordinator interviews with other clubs.

They could not, of course, prevent him from speaking with teams about a head coaching position, and he landed second HC interviews with three clubs in the 2024 cycle (including the Panthers, who ultimately settled on Canales). Obviously, he did not land any of those positions, but his status as one of the best defensive coaches in the game has endured.

More to come.
