We’re celebrating just 25 days left before the Panthers go to work during week one of the regular season! That means today, we’re going to highlight number 25 on their rosters: safety Issac Gifford!
Gifford joined the Panthers as an undrafted free agent following the 2025 NFL Draft. Gifford played five seasons at the University of Nebraska, appearing in 57 total games and notching 240 combined tackles, 1.5 sacks, 1 interception, and 13 pass deflections across that span. Lance Zierlein’s draft profile for him had this to say:
Aggressive, downhill safety prospect who will likely have to shine on special teams to make a roster. Gifford is very physical in man coverage against tight ends underneath but lacks the instincts and cover talent to extend his coverage on the back end. While he’s productive near the line of scrimmage in run support, he will take suspect angles and allow runners to slip through his grasp a little too frequently. Gifford is capable of competing for a role as a core special-teams prospect, provided a team is comfortable with him as a backup box safety.
Gifford managed 5 total tackles in limited backup action during Friday’s preseason game, but based on his college production and prospect information, I agree with Lance that Gifford appears to be a core special teamer, which is something Carolina could actually use. The issue here is Carolina hasn’t figured out the safety rotation just yet, as Demani Richardson, Lathan Ransom, and Nick Scott are all currently fighting for the one starting role that is open, and all should be able to contribute on special teams as well. Still, Carolina hasn’t had a true special teams ace at safety since Sam Franklin was allowed to walk, so there’s always a chance Gifford takes up the Colin Jones mantle of old.
I think Gifford has a strong chance to make the practice squad, but safety is the position on defense with the most opportunity to be had for whomever can set themselves apart. What are your thoughts on the UDFA prospect? Think he can be the next Ace That Runs The Place?
