The former journeyman and backup gets a new role, replacing the retiring Tom Clements.

Jordan Love’s 2025 will be a year of transition, particularly as it applies to his position coach. The Green Bay Packers have moved from having one of the most experienced and well-respected quarterbacks coaches in the NFL to one of the least experienced.

After the 2024 season concluded, Tom Clements elected to retire from coaching, calling it a career after his second stint coaching the Packers’ quarterbacks. Clements joined Mike McCarthy’s staff in 2006 and was on the Packers’ staff until 2016, then came back for the past three years to help coach Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love.

To fill that vacancy, the Packers have reportedly decided to promote offensive assistant Sean Mannion into Clements’ old job, giving the former NFL quarterback a prominent role on the offensive coaching staff.

The Packers brought Mannion aboard last year to help with the quarterbacks and the passing game, but did not give him a particularly specific title. 2024 was his only year of coaching experience, however, as he joined the staff shortly after retiring from playing football following the 2023 season. A third-round draft pick by the Rams in 2015 out of Oregon State, he also spent time with the Vikings and Seahawks during his playing career.

It is notable that the Packers promoted Mannion instead of assistant quarterbacks coach Connor Lewis, who worked under Clements each of the past three seasons, or instead of assigning this title to Luke Getsy, who is back in Green Bay with a vague “senior offensive assistant” title for the time being.

Getsy’s unclear title provides some ongoing intrigue around the makeup of the offensive coaching staff for the 2025 season. Getsy previously served as Green Bay’s quarterbacks coach under LaFleur from 2019-2021 before leaving to become the Chicago Bears’ offensive coordinator and playcaller. He has returned to Green Bay, but a move back to QBs coach seemed like a plausible one if offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich were to remain in his current role with the Packers.

However, Stenavich has interviewed for at least one playcalling OC job and may be a candidate for other such openings around the NFL. Getsy not being named as QBs coach may be a sign that the Packers expect Stenavich to depart, as Getsy would be the logical choice to take over if there is an opening at coordinator.

Stay tuned as the coaching carousel continues to spin in Green Bay.
