The Packers gave fans a look at their new historic alternates including an airbrushed leather helmet inspired by their 1923 jerseys.
The wait is finally over! The Green Bay Packers officially shared a first look at their new history-inspired alternate uniforms on Thursday morning, featuring a helmet airbrushed to look like the original leather helmets from the 1920’s. The navy jersey, which first leaked thanks to Dick’s Sporting Goods earlier this week, includes mustardy gold stripes along the shoulders and is joined by the return of the tan pants.
The star of the show, however, is the airbrushed helmet, which features an old school leather design fit for the roaring 20s. The design, which resembles the one that the University of Illinois football team wore last year, features leather accents and lots of detail all the way down to the stitching. The team also shared a video across social media giving fans a look at the airbrushing process.
Well, team historian Cliff Christl shared some insight with Sports Illustrated about what makes 1923 so special to the organization: it was the year the Packers became a publicly owned team.
“If that had not occurred, there’s no way the Green Bay Packers would be here today if they had been owned by an individual. Just no way they could have survived all the roadblocks and near-death experiences the team had had for years. So, that’s critical. 1923 is as big a year as there has been in Packers history. Put some money in the bank.”
Christl mentioned that initial stock sale raised $5,000 for the team to buy the uniforms that inspired the 2025 design. The Packers also shared a graphic to X/Twitter about exactly how the details of the design came together.
The Packers haven’t announced what game(s) fans can expect to see these on the field. Recently, the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers have announced they’ll both be wearing their newly released alternates when they play the Packers in Weeks 3 and 8, respectfully. However, both of those games have the Packers on the road, and expect them to unveil their own new alternates at a home game this season.
