With center Elgton Jenkins going on the injured reserve and linebacker Kristian Welch being promoted from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, the Green Bay Packers had a vacancy to fill on their practice squad this week. They wound up choosing to bring back a familiar face: offensive lineman Lecitus Smith.

Overall, this has been Smith’s fifth stint with the Packers under head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst. He was first signed by the team in May of 2024, before joining the team’s practice squad after the cutdown deadline, when he was released from the active roster.

After a month on the practice squad, though, the New England Patriots poached Smith to their 53-man roster. Smith then became available again for the Packers in the 2025 offseason, when they dealt with a lack of depth at the center position. That began his third stint with the team.

Smith stuck on the offseason roster, but was again cut by the team at the cutdown deadline for the second year. A few weeks later, after injuries to the line, Smith rejoined the Packers’ practice squad and was actually brought up to the gameday roster for the team’s game against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 4.

Last week, Smith was released from the practice squad to make room for the additions of tight end McCallan Castles, tight end Drake Dabney, Welch and receiver Michael Woods II. Now, he’s back on the team for a fifth go around.

For whatever reason, Green Bay uses this catch-and-release method with Smith in ways they don’t with other players. Either way, Smith now joins Brant Banks and Dalton Cooper as the Packers’ practice squad offensive linemen going into Week 11.
