The Green Bay Packers have signed center Leticus Smith and have waived receiver Sam Brown Jr. with an injury designation. The Packers signed Brown at the end of May after a successful workout with the team. Recently, the former Houston Cougars teammate of first-round rookie Matthew Golden has been dealing with an ankle issue.

More than likely, the Packers signed Smith due to their issues with shotgun snaps. While Elgton Jenkins, Sean Rhyan and Jacob Monk should have the team covered at the position when it comes time for the regular season, the reserve centers on the team (Trey Hill and Donovan Jennings) have both struggled converting to the position. On Family Night alone, Jennings had several high snaps that led to the play being called dead early. When the preseason comes around, those whistles won’t be so quick. Jennings, a college left tackle, moved to center after Hill’s poor stretch of shotgun snaps earlier in camp.

Smith has experience in Green Bay. The team initially signed him in May of 2024 before he was waived at roster cutdowns in August. From there, he re-signed with the Packers’ practice squad, where he held down a spot until Week 7. Then, he was poached by the New England Patriots, who kept them on their 53-man roster through the end of the regular season. In March, the Patriots, who had a new coaching staff, waived Smith. He was picked up off waivers by the Pittsburgh Steelers, who then waived him in May. Since May, Smith has been out of work.

Post-Steelers, Smith had an August workout with the Buffalo Bills. Now the Packers should give Smith some preseason reps with the third-team unit, with the possibility of Smith joining the practice squad again in 2025, considering their other scout team options at center.
