The Eagles have spent the past few years reaping the benefits of the “Tush Push” they’ve routinely harnessed to punch the ball into the end zone against opponents who are virtually powerless to stop it. However, the good times could be coming to an end in the very near future, and the Packers are reportedly gearing up to introduce a new proposal to increase the odds of the play being banned.

NFL teams have spent decades deploying the quarterback sneak in short-yardage situations in the hopes of scoring a touchdown or moving the chains, and it tends to be a pretty effective tactic; according to data compiled by the league, it worked about 70% of the time on the goal line between 2017 and 2022.

However, the Eagles have been able to get that number closer to 90% courtesy of the fairly revolutionary play most commonly referred to as the “tush push” (also known as the “Brotherly Shove”), a wildly effective tactic that relies on a couple of players shoving Jalen Hurts into the end zone with the help of the team’s formidable offensive line.

The tush push (which has also been adopted by the Bills with similar success) has become a very hot topic of conversation in the NFL over the past couple of years to the point where other teams have lobbied for it to be outlawed while citing largely unfounded player safety concerns to justify a potential rule change.

Earlier this year, the Packers submitted a proposal to the league’s rule committee in an attempt to get rid of the tush push once and for all. However, an official vote was tabled until May after internal (and informal) polling revealed it likely wouldn’t receive the 24 votes it needed to be ratified.

According to The Washington Post, that proposal was worded in a way that made it very clear the Eagles were the impetus, as it targeted plays involving “an offensive player…pushing a teammate who was lined up directly behind the snapper and receives the snap, immediately at the snap.”

However, the outlet says Green Bay is preparing to broaden the initial plan to institute a ban on any form of pushing, a practice that was formerly against the rules until the NFL welcomed it back into the fold with a tweak ahead of the 2005 season (pulling and other forms of “assisting the runner” are still disallowed).

Roger Goodell suggested the overly specific language of the initial plan played a role in the vote being delayed, so this seems like a pretty blatant attempt to address that concern in the hopes it will convince other teams to get on board by the time the vote rolls around after the two-day meeting where the tush push will learn its fate kicks off in Minneapolis on May 20th.
