When long-time Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Tom Clements (2006-2016, 2022-2024) retired after last season, head coach Matt LaFleur filled the vacancy by hiring Sean Mannion to the role. Mannion, who left Oregon State as a third-round pick and was the Beavers’ all-time passing leader, had previously played for LaFleur in 2017, LaFleur’s one season as the Los Angeles Rams’ offensive coordinator.
Mannion stuck around the league until 2023, and he was hired as a Packers offensive assistant for the 2024 season, his first year coaching. This year, he moved up to being an on-field coach for the first time in his career.
Now, the 33-year-old seems to be drawing attention from the league. The East-West Shrine Bowl announced its coaching staff for the 2026 edition of the game, and the West team’s offensive coordinator will be Mannion.
College all-star games are usually coached by a mix of NFL coaches, either retired coaches or young up-and-comers who serve in a role above the one they have at their current job. Mannion isn’t the first Packers coach to be invited to coach an all-star game, and the team has frequently brought up these hands-on experiences coaching draft prospects as opportunities for extra intel that lead to players’ selections to Green Bay.
