The Green Bay Packers and head coach Matt LaFleur have agreed to terms on a multi-year contract extension, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
LaFleur is 76-40-1 with six playoff trips in seven seasons as the Packers’ head coach. LaFleur’s winning percentage of .654 is 16th all-time, ahead of Andy Reid, Sean Payton and Mike Tomlin
With the Packers’ losing three-straight playoff games, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio did not to rule out LaFleur as a possibility to take over Tomlin’s vacated spot with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“The Packers could say any time they want that Matt LaFleur will be their coach in 2026,” Florio said Wednesday during an appearance on 93.7 The Fan. “The reality is Ed Policy, the new team president, said last June, ‘No new contract for Matt LaFleur until after the 2025 season. He’s signed through 2026.’ Ed Policy also said he doesn’t like lame-duck arrangements, so it’s up or out. It’s up or out.
“The longer it takes to negotiate this extension, the greater the chance that the Packers aren’t offering LaFleur what he thinks he’s earned. And it just cries out for someone to pick up the phone, someone who’s looking for a coach (to say), ‘Hey Packers, we can solve your problem. Here’s a draft pick. Let us go talk to LaFleur.
“I’m not ruling it out. I’m wondering whether or not the Packers want someone to call,” Florio said. “It’s just a weird posture right now. … The Packers have created the situation where those of us that pay attention to this stuff closely recognize this may blow up, and Matt LeFleur could be — could be — in play.
“Hey, we saw what Matt LaFleur’s Packers did this year, the night the Steelers were wearing those funky-ass uniforms.”
Four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers heard the outside noise that LaFleur could be on the hot seat in Green Bay. Rodgers, who played four seasons under LaFleur, thought it was an absolute joke that LaFleur and Mike Tomlin were receiving flak.
“[LaFleur has] done a lot of great things in Green Bay and we had a lot of success,” Rodgers said after the Steelers’ Wild Card Round loss to the Houston Texans last Monday night.
“When I first got in the league, there wouldn’t be conversations about whether those guys were on the hot seat.
“But the way that the league is covered now and the way that there’s snap decisions and the validity given to the Twitter experts and all the experts on TV now who you make it seem like they know what the hell they’re talking about, to me that’s an absolute joke.”
LaFleur admitted that he was stunned by Rodgers’ impassioned speech.
“I’m speechless,” LaFleur told The Athletic via text.
“He didn’t have to do that, but he did.
“[It’s] one of the nicest compliments [of] my life. I’m so appreciative of him for that.”
