Green Bay had two open roster spots open yesterday and have since used them both.
The Green Bay Packers’ 91-man offseason roster is now full following the team’s announcement that the squad has picked up running back Israel Abanikanda and cornerback Garnett Hollis Jr. The Abanikanda news was reported on yesterday.
Hollis began his college career at Northwestern before transferring to West Virginia for his final year of college. The 6’0”, 199-pound defensive back was a participant in the East-West Shrine Bowl this offseason and ran a 4.50-second 40-yard dash at his pro day, but was not drafted back in April.
Instead, he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Tennessee Titans, who released him within a week. Hollis has recently been on the workout circuit, showing face in Carolina on the 21st and Green Bay on the 24th.
The Packers have been limited in their workouts this offseason. Over the last week, though, they did bring in UFL receiver Baylon Sanders and former LSU cornerback Zy Alexander to Green Bay, beyond just Hollis.
The cornerback room is wide open right now. The trio of Nate Hobbs, Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine will be the team’s top three players in the unit, but there’s little to no proven depth behind those players. Hence, the transition from receiver to cornerback for Bo Melton, who is already a special teams contributor.
If those four players make the team, the Packers will still likely need to keep at least one or two more cornerbacks just to get through an NFL season. Hollis joins 2025 seventh-round pick Micah Robinson, 2024 sixth-round pick Kamal Hadden, 2024 seventh-round pick Kalen King, 2022 sixth-round pick Gregory Junior, undrafted rookie Tyron Herring and reserve/futures player Isaiah Dunn as the team’s options for the fifth and sixth cornerback spots on the depth chart.
According to Pro Football Focus, Hollis had a 53.1 defensive grade in 2024 for West Virginia with a 49.0 coverage rating. In 2023 with Northwestern, though, he was up to 73.0 and 70.6 in those same numbers. He also spent the vast majority of his time as an outside cornerback at the college level, playing 1,519 snaps out wide compared to only 8 in the slot, per their charting.
