The Green Bay Packers made a strong statement about their long-term defensive strategy by exercising the fifth-year option on edge rusher Lukas Van Ness’s contract.
This news, first reported by Matt Schneidman and confirmed by ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, ensures that the former first-round pick will remain on the roster through the 2027 season with a guaranteed payout of $13.8 million. Although his early statistical production is still developing, the decision reflects the organization’s confidence in his physical abilities and overall growth potential.
This vote of confidence was evident on the field during the opening day of mandatory minicamp, highlighting why top players have high expectations for his future. In an article for ESPN, Rob Demovsky described an impressive practice session in which Van Ness frequently disrupted the offense, recording three pressures and what would have been a guaranteed sack after getting past projected starting left tackle Jordan Morgan.
His dominant performance started right away in the first two plays of the 11-on-11 drills, where he made an immediate tackle for loss and put quick pressure on quarterback Jordan Love. This impactful display validated recent praise from rival pass rusher Micah Parsons, who had called Van Ness a prime breakout candidate just a week earlier.
Parsons stated, “I believe in him. Sometimes I think he looks into y’all, and that gets to him, but I think he can be as great as he wants to be.” After the session, Van Ness attributed his success in the backfield to simply having fun and letting loose on the field.
This wasn’t the first time the Dallas superstar recognized Van Ness’s raw potential. During a lopsided Packers loss to the Baltimore Ravens last December, a sidelined Parsons took to X to express admiration for the edge rusher’s elite traits, tweeting that Van Ness’s unique speed-to-power ability is unmatched.
