Packers draw familiar ref for Sunday’s game

If you’re looking for something to be preemptively annoyed about ahead of the Green Bay Packers’ upcoming game against the Cincinnati Bengals, I’ve got good news.

This week’s ref roulette has blessed us Packers fans with a Brad Allen-officiated game.

If that name rings a bell, it’s not because Allen’s crew throws a ton of flags. Actually, to the contrary, Allen’s officiating crew has called the fewest penalties of any in the league so far this season. No, no, it probably rings a bell because he helmed this masterclass:

Yes, that’s right. Brad Allen’s crew missed the obvious helmet-to-helmet on Keisean Nixon and the highly visible fumble recovery by Green Bay early in the Packers’ playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in January.

Anyway, now that you’re good and annoyed, it’s probably a good time to pepper in some Packers penalty stats.

Despite an early bye, the Packers are tied for the 4th most pre-snap penalties on offense, and tied for the 2nd most pre-snap penalties on defense. Overall, the Packers are currently tied with Minnesota as the most penalized team in the league on a penalty-per-game basis.

Not that any of this has anything to do with Sunday’s game against an opponent that the Packers theoretically should beat handily if everything goes according to plan, like it totally should and usually does. Ok, enjoy the rest of your day.
