The Green Bay Packers are just days away from kicking off a 2025 season suddenly filled with Super Bowl expectations against the Detroit Lions at home. Those expectations were imparted upon the franchise in the immediate aftermath of last week’s Micah Parsons trade, in which Green Bay had to send multiple first round picks to the Dallas Cowboys in return, as well as extending Parsons on a mammoth contract.
Parsons figures to turn the Packers’ at times shaky defensive line into one of the best units in the NFL, and recently, defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley shared the hilarious story about how he first got word of the trade.
“(Head coach Matt LaFleur) walked into my office & said he had someone on the phone. I was excited when I found out who it was,” said Hafley, per Weston Hodkiewicz on X, formerly Twitter.
Fans of the Packers were also excited when they found out that one of the NFL’s premier pass rushers and best players overall would be joining their squad for the long-term future.
While the Green Bay Packers were already expected to be a playoff team this year, just as they were in 2023 and 2024, not many thought they could realistically enter the Super Bowl mix this year, at least not until it was announced that Parsons would be coming to town.
Now Green Bay is fully in win-now mode, especially considering that they mortgaged a significant chunk of future assets in order to acquire the disgruntled star.
Green Bay is hoping for a strong year out of quarterback Jordan Love, who dealt with both injuries and interception issues last year during his second full year as the starter after taking over for Aaron Rodgers.
If he can stay healthy, there’s no reason why the Packers shouldn’t be able to compete for a division championship in the vaunted NFC North, and possibly even more than that.
In any case, Green Bay is slated to kick off its 2025 season with a huge early season test at home against the Detroit Lions on Sunday at 4:25 PM ET.
