Aaron Banks dropped out of practice on Thursday. We now know that it’s because he has a back issue.
Green Bay Packers preferred starting left guard Aaron Banks, who signed a $77 million contract with the team in free agency, dropped out of practice on Thursday with an apparent injury. In his pre-practice press conference on Friday, head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed that Banks is dealing with a back injury and will be day-to-day moving forward.
Beyond Banks is set to replace Elgton Jenkins, who moved from left guard to center this offseason. Unfortunately, Jenkins is also injured, dealing with a back injury of his own, and is currently on the non-football injury list. The non-football injury list designates that the player was injured outside of the facility.
To start training camp, Sean Rhyan, who rotated with Jordan Morgan at right guard last year, has been playing Jenkins’ center spot. Morgan has filled in at right guard for Rhyan. This is a change-up from how the Packers operated in minicamp and voluntary practices this summer, where Morgan was splitting reps at left tackle with Rasheed Walker and both Rhyan and Jacob Monk flipped between center and right guard.
It wasn’t Monk who replaced Banks when he went down yesterday, though. Instead, it was 2024 draft pick Travis Glover, who is probably best known for replacing Jenkins in the team’s playoff loss against the Philadelphia Eagles. After several penalties and blown assignments, Glover, who played all of 13 regular-season snaps last year, was benched for Kadeem Telfort.
So there’s a real chance that until one of Banks or Jenkins comes back, the Packers will be practicing without any of their preferred interior offensive line starters playing the positions they hope they’ll eventually line up at in Week 1.
