It hasn’t been a position of strength, but who is the WR you’ve loved the most?
As we start to pivot to some different offseason topics for Chicago Bears fans to ponder, I started thinking about players we’ve loved over the years. At many positions, there is probably one player that’s going to stand out, but at one position, I think there are a variety of options that fans could choose. This position has many options largely because it’s been one of the weaker positions the team has had.
I think this is a fun one because there are so many options to choose from. Again, we aren’t asking who is the best, we are asking who is your favorite.
Perhaps some Bears historians would choose Harlon Hill or perhaps Johnny Morris. Fans of the ‘85 team might choose Willie Gault. Tom Waddle’s toughness to go over the middle may get some nods. Marty Booker was always a fan favorite. Marcus Robinson was an elite deep threat. Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery were a fantastic duo. Perhaps it’s DJ Moore. Maybe Rome Odunze has already topped a fan’s list.
My answer: I think frequently, when we think of some of our favorite all-time players, they are usually players that we bonded to when we were kids. That’s no different for me here.
My guy is Willie Gault. Gault certainly wasn’t the greatest WR in Bears history, but he’s probably in the top 10. Gault was part of the legendary 1983 draft class and was the first-round pick of Jim Finks that year.
Gault had world-class speed and knew how to use it on the football field. He was a phenomenal deep threat and had a connection with Jim McMahon. The two of them would regularly hook up for long touchdowns. Gault averaged 20 yards a reception for his career.
For me personally, the second Bears game I ever attended was their game against Washington in 1985, the Bears fell behind 10-0, but Gault returned a kick 99 yards for a touchdown that cut the lead to 10 to 7 and the Bears scored 45 unanswered points.
It’s one of my favorite plays that I’ve ever witnessed and the first one I remember. That did it for me and Speedy Willie (after all, he’s World Class). I have a real soft spot for Tom Waddle and I love DJ Moore and think he’s in line for a huge 2025 season, but Gault was my first guy and for that, he still reigns as my favorite wide receiver in Bears history.
