Everybody hates the Chiefs, but why?
The Kansas City Chiefs are looking for their fourth Super Bowl championship over the last six seasons. They are on a remarkable run of dominance that the league hasn’t seen since Vince Lombardi’s Packers in the 1960s. The Packers won five championships in seven years, including a threepeat of their own.
But when you ask around, most people don’t want to see the Chiefs win anymore, they want to see someone else reach the pinnacle of the sport.
Why do so many people hate the Chiefs? Is it Taylor Swift? Is it this bizarre officiating controversy that has level-headed people claiming the NFL is rigged to help the Chiefs win? Is it just that people are jealous of greatness and want to see it end? The Chiefs seem more hated than Tom Brady’s New England Patriots and that seems to be an odd stance for fans of the league to have.
My answer: I’m pretty sure that not only will I be in the minority in this one, but I believe I will be overwhelmingly outvoted that most fans want to see the Philadelphia Eagles win this football game.
What fun is that? Do we really want the obnoxious fans of Philadelphia to be rewarded with another championship? Nick Foles brought them home a trophy not too long ago, why is it better if Philadelphia wins their second title in the last decade and keeps the Chiefs at three?
I want to see history. I want to see the Kansas City Chiefs win a third consecutive title. Do you want to see all 32 NFL teams win one title over 32 years? The true boredom of parity? Or do you want to see greatness? Do you want to see Jordan’s Bulls? Do you want to see Mantle’s Yankees? Do you want to see Gretzky’s Oilers? Do you want to see Mahomes’ Chiefs?
I think the officiating thing is silly. Do the Chiefs seem to get the benefit of many calls? Yes, they do. But so did Jordan and the Bulls. So did Tom Brady. Greatness gets the benefit of the doubt, it’s just human nature. You don’t see dominance like this very often, so when it’s here, embrace it.
I’m not suggesting that the Denver Broncos fans or Las Vegas Raiders fans or even Buffalo Bills fans should be cheering on the Chiefs. If the Chiefs are your rival and you don’t want to see their success, I get it. But for those of us with no rooting interest, I just don’t see why the Chiefs are hated.
