It’s no secret that the court of public opinion believes the Pittsburgh Steelers need to add a No. 2 wide receiver.
The team has $19 million to play with as the second of three preseason games approaches and free agents Gabe Davis, Amari Cooper, and Odell Beckham Jr. remain in the open market.
Could a part of the solution come in-house?
Scotty Miller continues to make a name for himself in camp during his second year wearing the black and gold.
Following the Steelers’ joint practice against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Acrisure Stadium, Miller’s former team, Nick Farabaugh of PennLive pointed to players praising Miller.
Farabaugh posted that multiple players said Miller stood out in their practice, hours after executive Andy Weidl met with the media and harked similar sentiments about Miller’s play.
Observing two separate days of practice myself, Miller had the best rapport with Aaron Rodgers, outside of DK Metcalf.
Miller, 28, won a Super Bowl with Tom Brady and the Bucs in 2020. Miller totaled career highs in targets (53), receptions (33), receiving yards (501), and touchdowns (3) in 16 games.
He started two of Tampa Bay’s four games in the playoffs and caught four balls for 80 yards and a score in the NFC Championship Game.
Miller caught five passes for 69 yards in limited action for the Steelers in 2024.
DK Metcalf and Calvin Austin are the only locks to make the wide receiver room. Roman Wilson likely isn’t going anywhere. Robert Woods was signed to a $2 million deal for a purpose. Ben Skowronek plays well on special teams.
Where is there room for Miller? The Steelers have practiced with four tight ends at times and move Connor Heyward around the field. Retaining Miller could be bad news for Heyward if Skowronek.
The Steelers host Tampa Bay in the second of three preseason games on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
