Sustaining drives in the NFL is vitally important. Even if you don’t score, picking up a first down or two, flipping the field and giving your defense a rest is imperative.

In 2024, the New England Patriots ranked 30th in points per game and 28th in first downs per game. The offensive output needs to be increased, and that starts with converting first downs.

NFL analyst Warren Sharp posted a table on X showing how often running backs were stuffed in short-yardage situations. “Short yartage” is defined as one to two yards to go. The Patriots were tied with the Miami Dolphins for last in the league at 44 percent.

The ability to pick up first downs in short-yardage situations would be a major improvement for the New England offense. They brought in offensive tackle Morgan Moses and Center Garrett Bradbury in free agency to reinforce the offensive line.

They also selected tackle Will Campbell with the fourth overall pick in the draft. Third-round pick Jared Wilson will also compete for reps at center. Running back TreVeyon Henderson is on the smaller side for the position, but he provides fresh legs in the backfield.

Head coach Mike Vrabel wants to play tough, physical football. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has always shown a commitment to running the ball as well.

The Patriots are poised to be more effective on the ground entering the 2025 season. Picking up easy first downs and keeping the offense on the field will go a long way to improving over last season’s win total.
