Vic Fangio wasn’t afraid to give the Eagles beats an update about everyone on his defense Tuesday:
Cliff notes from #Eagles DC Vic Fangio’s news conference:
*On CB Adoree’ Jackson: “It’s time to show who he is — or isn’t.”
*On S Andrew Mukuba missing time: “There’s no replacing physical reps.”
*On S Sydney Brown: “I see him getting better.”
*On LB Jihaad Campbell: He’s taking “small steps.”
*On DT Jordan Davis’ weight loss helping him get lower in his rushes: There are times he “needs to get 6-2 and bend his knees.”
*On reserve edge rusher competition: “No one’s really surfaced — good or bad.”
*On value of 1 on 1 drills: “Me personally, I don’t look at them a lot.”
*On CB Kelee Ringo: “He’s doing fine.”
Bang. Bang. Bang. Rattled one after the other off. Not even giving more than a sentence for each of them, but it spoke volumes. What I gathered from this is Adoree’ Jackson’s ass is on the chopping block, Jordan Davis needs to start winning more in pass rush, and Andrew Mukuba better take some Tylenol and get the hell out there.
It has gotta be a bitch to play for Fangio. Everyone who played sports had an old-school irritable coach from their high school or college days. I never played football at Lansdale Catholic, but that was legendary coach Jim Algeo for my high school buddies. Practice was grueling and nothing was good enough. You’d do it right nine times in a row, but if the tenth one went off the rails you’d hear him yelling at people from the parking lot. He was filled with piss and vinegar and one of the scariest dudes I’ve ever met even though he stood maybe 5’6. I had him for accounting class one year and I still have GAAP Principles seared into my brain. He won a state championship in 2004 the same year he had quintuple bypass surgery. Need I say more?
Here’s the thing though, 99% of the time after it’s all said and done the ones who finished, didn’t quit, and gave it their all appreciated coaches like this. It was an unspoken bond you had with the guys you played with and the coaches who pushed you. You hated the 100° August practices in the moment, and hell you probably hated the coaches, but later in life you start to think back with a little smile now that you never have to run a gasser or suicide ever again. That’s what it’s probably like playing for Fangio. He’s going to be on your ass every single day. He’ll tell reporters if he thinks you’re dragging ass and if he thinks you’re being a pussy. He’s not for everyone. Players in Miami were happy to see him go. He made the Eagles watch film of the second half of the Super Bowl before...
