The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed cornerback Cory Trice on the injured reserve list, with a return designation, the team announced Tuesday as part of its final cut-down to 53 players.

Trice suffered a hamstring injury in the team’s Friday Night Lights practice on Aug. 1 and had yet to make a full recovery by the mandatory cut-down date. Instead of carrying an injured Trice on the roster, the Steelers elected to place him on the injured reserve list.

A new rule in 2024, NFL teams can now place up to two players on the injured reserve list before or as part of the roster cut-down process. Those players also automatically count against the team’s maximum of eight IR returns throughout the regular season. By placing Trice on IR designated to return on Tuesday, the Steelers will be down to seven slots for the rest of the regular season.

Trice, who said this week that he was hoping to return in time for Week 1, will now miss at least four weeks by rule while on the injured reserve list.

“It’s going good. Right on track. Actually, ahead of plan,” he said. “[Week 1], that’s what we’re shooting for right now. We’re just trying to take it day by day, ain’t trying to be crazy with it, ain’t trying to break no records right now. It’s a long season, so we’re getting ready for it.”

The hamstring is the latest in a series of injuries that have hampered the start to Trice’s NFL career. He missed his entire rookie season with an ACL injury. Last year, Trice earned a role on the team’s Dime package and made his first career interception against the Denver Broncos in Week 2. The following week, he suffered a hamstring injury that cost him most of the season. He ended up appearing in just six games.
