A multi-millionaire has earned thousands of dollars
Odell Beckham, Jr. converting his $750,000 salary from the Rams into Bitcoin is not nearly as big of a deal as it was made out to be at the time, but regardless the receiver still believes he made the right decision in 2021 and maybe he’s right.
The value of BTC at the time was roughly $64,000 and today the price is at $104,000. This amounts to a value over $1.1 million, nearly double what he was paid by L.A. in 2021.
However, let’s not forget that OBJ has earned $100 million in his NFL career, not to mention the millions he has made in endorsements as the face of the league; if not intentionally, then certainly indirectly.
How many receivers and players have entered the league in the last five years and said that their role model is Odell Beckham, Jr.? He’s probably the most popular receiver of the 2010s, if not the most popular player overall.
OBJ bragged about his BTC winnings last November and the value has gone up another $12,000 per Bitcoin since then. Although at this point, OBJ’s holdings are $0 unless he cashed out.
But again, we’re talking about a very rich man who has earned about $350,000 (in present day value if he sells) because of this decision to make a promotional arrangement with CashApp.
If anything, OBJ has made way more money by promoting CashApp and Bitcoin than he has from the actual $750,000 he converted into the cryptocurrency.
Make no mistake: This was probably a business decision to use OBJ as a marketing tool, not a personal decision to believe in cryptocurrency as the wave of the future.
(I don’t know the laws or rules here, but in case it is not clear this post has nothing to do with endorsing cryptocurrency. It’s about a former Rams player who took his salary in an unusual manner and it’s still impacting him today.)
It was not the Rams decision to pay OBJ a salary that would be Bitcoin and so far not many other players have followed suit. OBJ is happy with his decision to get paid in Bitcoin, but he’s probably happier than he can still do paid ads for it four years later and counting.
