On Monday, July 28, a gunman identified as 27‑year‑old Shane Devon Tamura entered the lobby of 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan — home to the NFL headquarters, Blackstone, KPMG, and other big name firms — and opened fire with an M4 style rifle. According to new reports, Tamura was targeting the NFL offices.
Upon entering the building, and while wearing body armor, Tamura shot off‑duty NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who was working security, and killed three other civilians in the lobby. A fifth person, an NFL employee, was critically injured and remains hospitalized.
Tamura then took an elevator to the 33rd floor—belonging to Rudin Management, where he killed another person before committing suicide by gunshot.
A suicide note was found on Tamura, in which he claimed he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), referenced former NFL player Terry Long, accused the NFL of concealing brain injury risks, and asked that his brain be studied posthumously.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday morning, embattled NYC Mayor Eric Adams says that Tamura intended to target the NFL offices, but mistakenly took the wrong elevator and ended up on the 33rd floor — the NFL’s offices actually occupy several lower floors in the same building.
“He did have a note on him. The note alluded to that he felt he had CTE, a known brain injury for those who participate in contact sports. He appeared to have blamed the NFL for his injury,” Adams said on CBS Mornings.
“From our preliminary investigation, he took the wrong elevator bank up to the NFL headquarters. Instead, it took him to Rudin Management, and that is where he carried out additional shootings and took the lives of additional employees,” he added.
Tamura was reportedly a high school football player but never played at the collegiate or professional levels.
According to law enforcement in Las Vegas, Tamura had a documented mental health history, with prescription medications being found in his car alongside a rifle case with rounds, a loaded revolver, and more ammunition.
