The New York Jets will be short a quarterback for the remainder of the preseason, with head coach Aaron Glenn revealing on Tuesday that Tyrod Taylor has undergone an operation.
Taylor has gone under the knife for arthroscopic knee surgery and will be out for the next few weeks. The team expects him to be ready for Week 1, though recovery times vary.
Fortunately, the QB didn’t have the surgical procedure done on his throwing leg, which should be a plus, and could be back in time for the Jets’ season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 7, in which he could be called upon if needed.
Taylor is expected to be the next quarterback behind Justin Fields, who joined NY this offseason after playing 2024 in Pittsburgh.
His absence will mean increased reps for 2024 UFL MVP Adrian Martinez and undrafted rookie Brady Cook.
Fields has also been dealing with injury ahead of his first season with the Jets, having suffered a dislocated toe in practice, which makes Taylor’s surgery even more significant.
The veteran quarterback is heading into his second season with the Jets, and there were calls for him to replace Aaron Rodgers as the starter. The coaching staff eventually convinced the owner to keep A-Rod as QB1, but they got rid of him once the season ended.
Taylor made two appearances for NY last season, completing 77 percent of his passes as he threw three touchdowns without an interception.
A former Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion with the Baltimore Ravens, Taylor’s locker room presence is considered crucial for the team, especially as it will be Aaron Glenn’s first season in charge.
Should his recovery not go as planned, it could leave the new head coach with regrettable depth behind Fields.
