Notes: Lions offer big surprise for third-graders in heartwarming video
Pride of Detroit Pride of Detroit

Just a few short days removed from a brutal Detroit Lions loss to start the season, a video of a third-grade classroom receiving an incredible gift from the Lions may help put the pep back in your step.

You may remember her viral videos — Mary Cripper is a third-grade teacher in Miami who made national headlines for incorporating the NFL in her lessons. What started with tracking the Dolphins’ wins and losses last season became an entire curriculum she named “NFelementary.”

In a video that has nearly 1 million likes on TikTok, Crippen explains that her students sent letters to NFL teams from their Miami classrom.

“Yesterday, we received a response,” she announces to the students, who begin screaming.

She picks up a box, turning it to the side to show the Detroit Lions logo. She then read a note from the Lions: “Thank you for all the work you do on NFelementary and teaching lessons that go beyond the gridiron. Go Lions.”

Each child received a bunch of fun items, including Honolulu blue sunglasses, temporary tattoos, and pom-pons. One student received a special message from the Lions, who told her she was getting her very own autographed photo of Jared Goff. At the three minute mark, you can see the kids gasp and absolutely lose it.

The little girl begins pulling more gifts out of the box, such as a stuffed Roary doll, an Aidan Hutchinson jersey, an Amon-Ra St. Brown jersey, and more. I mean, the kids just lose it.

Please enjoy this heartwarming video as you comb through article after article of what went wrong Sunday, as the Lions prepare to right the ship this upcoming weekend against the Bears.

And onto the rest of your notes.

  • “There’s a reason that game tape from Week 1 in the NFL should be labeled “for educational purposes only.” It’s often ugly, frequently inaccurate, and very quickly worthy only of being thrown away. In the case of the Detroit Lions-Green Bay season opener, very far away.” Detroit Free Press columnist Mitch Albom offers his reflections on Sunday afternoon. ($)

  • Heads up if you’re heading to the home opener this upcoming weekend — there’s a Jahmyr Gibbs-inspired combo meal featuring Honolulu Blue Sour Patch Kids.
