In the days following rookie running back Quinshon Judkins’ arrest on a charge of domestic violence, Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam expressed his frustration that there was simply no way to prevent the Browns from having players tied to violence against women.

“Let me say it’s extremely frustrating,” Haslam said at his annual training camp address alongside wife Dee Haslam. “Obviously we’re not communicating as well as we should and we take responsibility for that. We have internal resources, we have external resources. We talk about it continually and it’s something that we need to do a better job on. But it is frustrating.”

Haslam and the Browns, of course, handed a five-year, $230 million contract to quarterback Deshaun Watson while Watson was in the midst of a sexual assault scandal. Haslam later admitted that trading for Watson was a mistake, but not because of the allegations!

He also stated that the incident, the third such in the last year for a Browns player, was a wakeup call for the organization.

“Whenever you’re not successful, you got to take it a step back and say ‘What can we do better?’” he said. “If you’d have asked me a month ago, I would say no. We’re all over it. We talk about it continually. We’ve had outside speakers, inside speakers. We talk about it a lot, but clearly we need to look to see what else we can do. That’s not acceptable.”

The Cleveland Browns Haven’t Actually Learned Anything At All!

Of course, most fans took Haslam’s comments with a grain of salt, considering his attitude toward Watson and the fact that Judkins faced no internal consequences.

Judkins was eventually cleared after prosecutors found that they didn’t have enough evidence to move forward with charges. But on Friday, the Browns made another move to suggest that they simply do not learn.

Undrafted rookie wide receiver Isaiah Bond announced that he was signing with Cleveland after being cleared in an ongoing sexual assault investigation. Bond, a star for the Texas Longhorns, was considered a strong candidate to go on Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft but went unselected after sexual assault allegations popped up just before the draft.

Like with Judkins, a Collin County, Texas grand jury opted against indicting Bond.

Following his arrest in April, Bond filed a federal complaint against his accuser in which he alleged he was “pursued and preyed upon for months” by the defendant, a woman he met on Instagram.

Bond may well be entirely innocent. Only he and the woman involved in the case know for certain. The same may be true of Judkins.

But if the Browns and Haslam are truly frustrated by their players routinely being linked with violence against women, they may want to stop signing and keeping around players who have been linked with violence against women.
