Here is the San Francisco 49ers’ first injury report of Wild Card weekend.
Will not practice:
LB Dee Winters (ankle)
Edge rusher Keion White (groin/hamstring)
LT Trent Williams (hamstring)
WR Ricky Pearsall (knee/ankle)
Limited:
TE George Kittle (ankle)
Edge rusher Yetur Gross-Matos (anle)
LB Luke Gifford (quad)
Kyle Shanahan doesn’t have a strict rule about playing players who haven’t practiced all week. It’s dependent on the player, according to Shanahan: “Whether they’ve done it before. What is the history of the player and stuff like that?”
Wednesday isn’t a rest day for Williams, as it typically was during the regular season. Shanahan is hopeful that Williams will be better on Thursday and can get some work in, but wasn’t sure as of today.
As for Pearsall, Shanahan said he reaggravated his PCL injury during Week 17’s game after acknowledging the 49ers didn’t have any physical practices last week. Pearsall is in the same boat as Williams.
White was one of two pass rushers to produce last week. He’s the team’s best interior pass rusher. White’s absence from the game would be a big blow to the 49ers’ rotation up front.
Shanahan said Kyzir White will practice today. Shanahan noted what he sees will determine how they use White. With Winters out, there is a starting spot available. Shanahan shared that Brandon Staley helped influence the decision to sign White, calling him smart and instinctive. White played for Gus Bradley, the 49ers’ current assistant head coach, from 2017 to 2020 when Bradley was the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers.
This is the first normal week of practice for the 49ers since the first week of December. The 49ers get an extra day this week. They looked like a team playing its third game in 13 days under the national spotlight.
