The Tush push is under attack, folks. Nefarious forces in the NFL are looking to eliminate the play that has made the Philadelphia Eagles a monster on short-yardage situations the last few years.

With a vote on banning the signature play set to take place soon at the next NFL league meetings, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni is lobbying his former assistants that are now head coaches to have their teams vote to keep the play.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, here’s the tush push.

A great Philly o-line helps Jalen Hurts, who probably has the strongest lower half of any NFL quarterback get to the line to gain with some help from behind from some running backs, including one of the league’s strongest running backs in Saquon Barkley. It’s not that the play is totally unstoppable, as there have been times where it’s been stopped. But, it’s far more effective than any other kind of short-yardage play.

Even though an NFL study suggests there’s no increased injury risk for the play, some teams are trying to ban the play, and The Athletic NFL Insider Dianna Russini claims that efforts for the ban is gaining momentum, with the NFL Competition Committee set to get their meeting underway today. Here’s what he told NFL insider Mike Garafolo.

Spoke to Nick Sirianni today on the tush-push vote. With a grin, he said: “We’ll see how it goes. All I will say about it is (Jonathan) Gannon, (Shane) Steichen and (Kellen) Moore better vote for it. They are in the (head coach) position right now because of that play. So all three, I better have those three votes right there and the #Eagles’ vote. I at least know we have four.”

I’m not sure whether that logic will hold up. Even if it does, the Eagles will need more than just those votes to save the tush push.
