PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Nick Herbig said he’s “optimistic” about his chances of playing in the team’s Week 16 game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, despite not practicing much this week.

Herbig did not practice on either Wednesday or Thursday. He was at practice doing at least some work on Friday.

Herbig said he’s “optimistic, but we’ll see” when asked about his status this week. He could be trending toward a final decision coming either after the team’s walkthrough on Saturday or a game-time decision at Ford Field on Sunday.

With starting left outside linebacker T.J. Watt unlikely to play as he continues to rest after suffering partially collapse lung, Herbig would be in line to start if he can play. If not, rookie Jack Sawyer, recently re-acquired Jeremiah Moon and practice squad member DeMarvin Leal are the team’s other three options.
