Nick Herbig signed a four-year extension worth $100 million with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday, and he is eager to prove that the front office made the right decision.
Herbig has carved himself a role on the Steelers since being drafted in 2023 in the fourth round. He started as a raw prospect, with TJ Watt taking him under his wing. Last year, the 23-year-old linebacker had a breakout campaign, tallying career-highs of 21 solo tackles and 7.5 sacks.
Aside from Herbig, the Steelers also re-signed Darnell Washington to a four-year deal worth $42 million.
Herbig was happy that Washington, whom Pittsburgh also drafted in 2023 in the third round, was retained, while also giving praise to his other teammates, as reported by ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.
“I’d love to keep that whole class here. I think we got a bunch of dogs in there. I’m excited. I think some things are going to happen. I hope so. Keeanu Benton is a dog. He’s definitely one of the best in the league. I want to play my whole career with that guy,” said Herbig.
“Me and Joey (Porter Jr.) developed a great bond. He’s a dog too. We need a lockdown corner, Peezy Island. Darnell is a freak of nature. He’s like a monster. So, definitely need Darnell back. Spencer (Anderson) is a dog too. We still got (Broderick Jones). We got dogs all across the board.”
Benton and Porter were also part of the draft class of Herbig and Washington. They, however, have to be given an extension.
Herbig, who also had a career-best 18 quarterback hits last season, said he does not consider playing anywhere else, reiterating his commitment to the Steelers for taking a chance on him.
He acknowledged that he might still play behind Watt and Alex Highsmith, but that is not an issue for him, stressing that he is a team player.
