Nick Chubb update: Browns want but don’t need the free agent to return

The NFL draft and more NFL free agency has come and gone while Nick Chubb remains on the market

The terms “wants” and “needs” can be used in many ways. We apply those terms to our everyday lives when it comes to making decisions, and the same goes for the Cleveland Browns. Examples of these “wants” and “needs” are:

  • Despite owning a car, you “want” to buy a new car because that car is better than your current one.

  • You “need” to have a job, because you “need” to earn money in order to provide for yourself

  • Despite owning a television in your house/apartment, you “want” to buy that new 4K TV because that television looks better in your apartment than your current one.

You get the point. How does this apply to the Browns? As it stands right now, running back Nick Chubb is currently a free agent. As far as we know, he hasn’t conducted any visits with any teams. Chubb doesn’t seem to have a market (which isn’t a surprise considering how he is just coming off a catastrophic knee injury he suffered in 2023). When Chubb came back this past season, he didn’t look like himself.

Does that mean that Chubb is near the end stage of his career?

No, but he’s also getting up there in terms of age.

Many expected a reunion with Chubb’s only professional team, but then Cleveland drafted two running backs and gave Jerome Ford a new contract, which led to a lot of Chubb departure speculation.

Many Browns fans are wondering what is taking the team so long to re-sign Chubb. Judging from the social media reactions, it’s a clear consensus that the majority of the fanbase wants Chubb back.

Does the team feel the same way? Seems like the answer is yes:

Does Cleveland need Chubb back? Not necessarily. However, the team would want to have him back.

The bigger question, now that the Browns have three backs secured in their spots, is whether Chubb wants to return.

Chubb is a fan favorite. He’s quiet, but he’s a hard worker and it’s clear how much he means to this city and the locker room. However, he is someone that the Browns don’t necessarily need to bring back for success on the field.

The team will be fine without him, especially since his role will likely be diminished. Chubb would still be viewed as a leader and a good locker room guy.

Cleveland wants Chubb to come back, but they don’t necessarily need him to return.
