The Cleveland Browns are reportedly looking around for help at the running back position. For a team that used two draft picks on backs, restructured Jerome Ford’s deal and let fan favorite Nick Chubb depart in free agency, it is concerning that the need is still present.
Obviously, the Quinshon Judkins’ legal situation, now in the past, and contract negotiations are a big part of the issue for the team, but that doesn’t change how Browns fans see the situation. Dylan Sampson doesn’t seem fit to carry the load as a lead back, Judkins remains unsigned and Ford has never fulfilled the promise seen in him at times.
Thursday morning, all of a sudden, rumors hit social media that Chubb’s time with the Houston Texans was not going well. Cleveland fans quickly put two and two together and saw that it added up to a reunion between Chubb and the Browns. Reaching out to people around the league with some connections to the Texans, DBN received reports that were not flattering for the team’s former star back, but that Chubb was unlikely to be cut or traded anytime soon.
Chubb has reportedly shown very little ability to cut or accelerate. The burst is gone and, because of that, the vision doesn’t match up to the new physical reality, according to those who have watched Chubb since arriving in Houston. Similar to WR Amari Cooper last season, there are concerns that the former second-round pick has hit the wall/fallen off the performance cliff.
Despite that, Chubb is likely to make the Texans initial 53-man roster as starting running back Joe Mixon still has not practiced during training camp and could miss the start of the season. In his only preseason action, Chubb had five carries for 25 yards last week with a long rush of nine yards.
Everyone who has followed or covered the Browns wishes Chubb well, whether it is in Cleveland or somewhere else. Houston could make Chubb available (either via trade or releasing him), opening up a reunion with the Browns at some point this season. It is also possible that the current version of Nick Chubb is nowhere near the star that we all remember.
