The health of multiple 49ers defensive stars has been a key offseason talking point. In the case of edge rusher Nick Bosa and linebacker Fred Warner, though, the period leading up to training camp has provided a positive update.
Both Bosa and Warner avoided being placed on the active/PUP list to begin training camp. It was recently learned the latter had healed in full, so today’s news comes as little surprise. Bosa, meanwhile, continues to make progress in his recovery from an ACL tear.

The 49ers will gradually work Bosa back into the mix during summer practices, ESPN’s Nick Wagoner notes. A cautious approach on the part of the team would of course come as no surprise. Bosa is owed over $23MM for 2026, a season which will be key in determining his future with San Francisco. Another big-ticket extension could be worked out if the former Defensive Player of the Year manages to deliver a healthy and productive campaign this fall.
While Warner and Bosa will be available at the onset of camp practices, others are likely in position to miss time. The 49ers placed tight end George Kittle, edge rusher Mykel Williams, running back Isaac Guerendo and defensive tackle Alfred Collins on the active/PUP list on Saturday. Kittle’s rehab from an Achilles tear has gone well to date, but his Week 1 availability is still in doubt. Nevertheless, general manager John Lynch said (via Wagoner) the team remains “thrilled” with Kittle’s progress.
Williams, like Bosa, had his 2025 campaign cut short by an ACL tear. Last year’s No. 11 pick is believed to be nearing a return to full health; the same applies to Collins, who had offseason shoulder surgery. Guerendo suffered a pectoral tear in May, and his history on the injury front could leave him on the roster bubble this summer.
In addition to today’s procedural moves, the 49ers waived defensive tackle Evan Anderson. A former UDFA, Anderson made 12 appearances with San Francisco in 2024. He saw time on the team’s practice squad last season before signing a reserve/futures deal in January.
