The debate around whether or not the NFL should ban the tush push has led to hot takes that were previously not even considered possible, as one NFL writer has put Jalen Hurts into the same sentence as sporting legends Kareem Abdul-Jabaar and Bob Gibson.
While Jalen Hurts is undoubtedly one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks, that has more to do with his winning mentality and ability to perform under pressure than his raw talent. In their Week 2 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, for example, he threw for just 101 yards.
Despite Hurts’ often efficient yet unremarkable stat lines, an NFL writer that cuts a check from CBS has suggested that he will be mentioned alongside Abdul-Jabaar and Gibson if the NFL winds up banning the tush push.
“Jalen Hurts is going to be in the same conversation as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bob Gibson someday,” CBS NFL writer Jeff Kerr argued.
“The NCAA banned the slam dunk because Abdul-Jabbar could do it and no one else couldn’t. The MLB lowered the pitcher’s mound because Gibson was too dominant. When the ‘tush push’ gets banned someday, Hurts and the Eagles were too good at it.”

Kirk’s logic, however, ignores one very key detail: while pitching and dunking are individual athletic feats, the tush push is a PLAY designed for a TEAM. If Hurts was standing at the line of scrimmage behind only a center, the tush push wouldn’t work, now would it?
A more apt, and recent, comparison would be Major League Baseball deciding to ban the defensive shift, which — which a tactically intelligent move — was stifling the scoring and therefore the excitement of the games. Banning the tush push wouldn’t be a referendum on its fairness, but rather, the way it impacts the excitement of the game.
No one other than Eagles fans enjoys watching the Birds plow forward for feet at a time, and THAT is why the NFL is debating whether or not to do away with it. It’s making the game predictable, which therefore makes it less enjoyable, and that’s in direct contrast with the NFL’s best interests.
