Drake Maye is enjoying one of the best seasons of any quarterback in the NFL, and his former college teammate and Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs is taking notice.
Downs recently gave Maye a new nickname, calling him “Great Maye” for the way he has played.
“I told multiple people two years ago that Maye was going to take the Patriots to be a top team in the NFL,” Downs said Monday on the “Downs 2 Business” podcast.
Downs and Maye played together at North Carolina for two seasons in 2021 and 2022, before Downs made the jump to the NFL.
In 2022, Maye delivered an outstanding performance as a primary starter at North Carolina. Over the course of 14 games, he passed for an impressive 4,321 yards and threw a remarkable 38 touchdowns.
Downs had a chance to closely observe Maye when he was just 19, and now the whole NFL community is getting a firsthand look at the talent Downs recognized three years ago.
There’s a possibility that the Colts and Patriots could face off in the playoffs this season, as both teams currently hold postseason spots. It would be intriguing to see Downs and Maye go head-to-head against each other.
