The Dallas Cowboys attempted to pull off the classic Friday news dump technique last weekend when they announced they were promoting offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach. The hire has largely been seen as an underwhelming one as there were no other teams in contention for his services.

While Jerry Jones unsteady leadership of the Dallas Cowboys has become increasingly prominent in recent years, the hiring of Brian Schottenheimer has only added fuel to that fire, particularly after he issued a genuinely nonsensical statement about the decision.

“Brian Schottenheimer is known as a career assistant. He ain’t Brian no more. He is now known as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys,” Jones told ESPN‘s Todd Archer.

Jones’ quotes immediately befuddled the NFL world, with football fans sturggling to decipher what the quote means and why Jones thought it sounded like a compliment.

I am probably going to think about “He ain’t Brian no more” at least once a day for the rest of my life https://t.co/jacr1wus5X

Schottenheimer, 51 years old, has never been a head coach in the National Football League. In his 14 seasons as an offensive coordinator in the NFL (with the New York Jets, then-St. Louis Rams, Seattle Seahawks, and Dallas Cowboys), Schottenheimer has led just one offense that finished the season ranked in the top ten, and that was the 2023 Cowboys. Furthermore, half of Schottenheimer’s offenses have failed to place in the top 20.

In addition to serving as an OC for the aforementioned teams, the son of longtime NFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer has also had jobs with the Kansas City Chiefs, then-Washington Redskins, then-San Diego Charges, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Syracuse, USC, and Georgia.
