Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has responded to criticism from former NFL MVP Cam Newton. According to Newton, Tagovailoa is underperforming relative to what he’s being paid.
The Miami Dolphins have begun the 2025 season with an 0-3 record, heaping tons of pressure onto head coach Mike McDaniel and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
While appearing on First Take this week, NFL analyst and former Heisman Trophy winner/NFL quarterback Cam Newton weighed in on Tagovailoa’s performance so far this season, particularly as it relates to his contract.
The 27-year-old Tagovailoa signed a four-year, $212 million extension with the Miami Dolphins in July 2024, which gives him a higher yearly salary than the likes of many of the NFL’s elite signal-callers.
“Tagovailoa is making more than Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Baker Mayfield, Matthew Stafford, Jayden Daniels,” Newton said. “Am I pocket watching? No, I’m putting things into perspective here.
“In this case, it should be more money, more expectations. … What you’re being paid, what you’re asked to do, what you have the capability of — from one quarterback to the other, I look at the situation like come on dawg. Especially when you’ve got a Ferrari and a Lamborghini and other amenities that other quarterbacks wish they had.”
While Tua certainly has a right to stand up for himself and respond, what he clapped back to Newton with left many NFL fans feeling as though he came away from the situation looking even worse.
“Well, anybody can play quarterback in this league then. I want to see anybody on the streets come and play quarterback,” Tagovailoa said. “Cam is doing his thing for sure, but I think it’s easier to be able to hold a clicker and talk about it that way or talk about what someone else is doing wrong when you’re not going out and having to do the same as them.

“Cam Newton’s MVP season is better and means more than any season Tua will have in his career,” one NFL fan said.
“The CTE is strong in this one, how you forget Cam Newton was an all pro and MVP QB in the league while he had Tedd Ginn Jr as WR1????? If Cam had the weapons Tua has now, that mfa liable to go undefeated and win a SB,” another added.
