Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears might go on to win the Super Bowl. We don’t know!
What I do know is that punter Tory Taylor has been very busy over the last 13 months.
The text he received from his rookie quarterback right after they were drafted to the same team aged like milk. No team in the NFL has punted more often.
Williams, a Heisman Trophy winner, was drafted with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Taylor, the greatest punter in college football history, was drafted with the 122nd overall pick that same year.
The former texted the latter shortly after the pick was announced.
“Hey, you’re not going to punt too much here,” Williams told Taylor.
It was a weird text to send to a guy he’s never met but it is right on brand with the quarterback’s personality. He was just trying to break the ice. It was a joke. Kind of.
I don’t know how Caleb Williams got Tory Taylor’s phone number on draft day. I don’t know if they hang out at the team facility or what. Maybe they like each other. Maybe they hate each other. Doesn’t matter.
Regardless of the locker room dynamics, Taylor’s first impression of Williams was the text that told him he was not going to have to work very hard. That proved to be entirely untrue.
The Chicago Bears have played 19 games with their former No. 1 overall pick as their starting quarterback in 2024 and 2025. They punted 92 times over the course of those 19 games.
That is an average of 4.85 punts per game.
No team in the NFL averaged more punts per game over that same 19-game schedule. None of the other 31 teams in the NFL punted more often than the Chicago Bears.
Caleb Williams’ text to Tory Taylor did not come true.
