The NFL is declining to hold a supplemental draft this summer, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, which leaves quarterback Brendan Sorsby having to wait until the 2027 NFL Draft to possibly get a crack at the league.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were a team that could’ve possibly been interested in bidding on Sorsby.

“A letter is being sent to Sorsby, and to all 32 NFL teams, to inform them of the league’s decision,” Schefter wrote Tuesday on X. “The league continues to try to show it has little tolerance for gambling issues.

Brendan Sorsby threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns at Cincinnati last year, while also rushing for 580 yards and another nine scores. His 36 total touchdowns were tied for third in the nation. He transferred to Texas Tech this offseason before getting wrapped up in a gambling scandal.

Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd had urged the Pittsburgh Steelers to make a move for Sorsby on Monday.

“The Steelers have been in this malaise forever, where they’re kind of a play-it-safe organization, ‘We don’t fire coaches, we spend our money on defense,’” Cowherd said. “Even hiring Mike McCarthy, it kinda felt like, ‘Eh. That’s kinda safe.’ … What would be more new-school than going to the supplemental draft, getting a kid with an addiction, and saying, ‘We gotta roll the dice here.’ Because you’re too good with Aaron Rodgers to be a top-10-12 pick next year.

“So you’re gonna have to give up loads of draft capital to get an Arch Manning, to get a Dante Moore.”
