NFL Running Back Rushed To Hospital With Scary Injury After Illegal Tackle At Practice

Indianapolis Colts running back Salvon Ahmed had to be carted off and taken to the hospital after getting injured on an illegal hip-drop tackle in Sunday’s practice.

According to ESPN’s Stephen Holder, Salvon Ahmed suffered a serious leg injury after being tackled by safety Trey Washington from behind. Holder reports it was a “hip-drop” tackle that brought Ahmed down, a maneuver the NFL outlawed last year.

Ahmed was carted off and rushed to the hospital for X-rays. The severity of his injury is unclear at this time.

“Never want to see that happen,” Shane Steichen. “I know we don’t encourage hip-drop tackles. I know Trey’s down in the dumps, and I don’t think he’s trying to do that. We’re just trying to create an edge…Those (backups) are going to have to tackle come preseason.”

The Colts signed Salvon Ahmed to their practice squad in October last year, though he never played a game for them. He was re-signed by the organization in January.

Ahmed was competing for one of the Colts’ backup running back positions behind starter Jonathan Taylor, newcomer Khalil Herbert and rookie DJ Giddens.

Salvon Ahmed Spent His First Four Seasons With The Miami Dolphins’

Ahmed played his first four NFL seasons with Tua Tagovailoa’s Miami Dolphins. He had his best season in 2020, rushing for 319 yards and three touchdowns as the second-stringer behind Myles Gaskin.

Over his first four seasons, Ahmed recorded 593 rushing yards and five touchdowns to go along with 40 receptions for 274 yards and one touchdown.
