Bo Nix is firmly locked in as the Denver Broncos starting quarterback for the foreseeable future. But as he recovers from his ankle injury, the Broncos want to ensure they have proper backup options in place.
The New Orleans Saints now have Tyler Shough as their QB1. That could lead to a trade of backup Spencer Rattler. And with Payton being so connected to the Saints franchise at large, the Broncos could be deemed a logical trade landing spot, via Dan Graziano of ESPN.
“The team signed former No. 2 pick Zach Wilson this offseason to add to its QB room,” Graziano wrote. “If Rattler’s the odd man out, he should generate interest. His 14 NFL starts haven’t been great (the Saints lost 13 of them), but they do constitute the kind of experience teams prize when looking for backup/developmental QBs.”
“Rattler is also 25, so he could still have a career ahead of him as an NFL quarterback somewhere other than New Orleans,” he continued. “Broncos coach Sean Payton still has strong ties to the Saints, and that could be a team to watch if there’s any change to its backup QB plans.”
As it stands, the Broncos have Jared Stidham and Sam Ehlinger as their backup options. Denver just enter the season without making any changes. But if Stidham/Ehlinger struggle throughout training camp/the preseason maybe Denver decides to bring in some extra help.
In this case, the Saints would need to be willing to trade Rattler. While Shough is the clear starter, their backup option does come with ample starting experience. Still, with Wilson offering similar upside, maybe New Orleans decides to try and coup some draft capital.
At which point, Payton may get involved. There are many moving pieces that need to happen. But if the head coach is interested in a player on the Saints, the franchise he was a part of from 2006-2021 would surely listen.
