Former Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby appears to be headed to the NFL. Sorsby intends to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft, which is expected to take place in late July. But teams are still doing their homework on Sorsby after his injunction against the NCAA related to gambling on college football games.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated shared some of the questions league executives are asking about Sorby before the supplemental draft.

“The way I’d look at the gambling, I don’t really care if he’s suspended for part of this year so much,” said an AFC exec. “What I care about is, can I sleep good at night knowing it’s behind him? I know he went to rehab, but was that a reaction to getting caught or a real effort to get past it?”

The severity of Sorsby’s gambling addiction, and additional context around his actions, could be priority information to collect from NFL teams. No team wants to spend to acquire Sorsby then have him get suspended again on gambling accusations.

“I want the context of it—was he sitting on the couch bored, a kid punching bets into his phone, or was this strategic and planned out and all that?” said another AFC exec. “If this is just a guy on his phone placing bets, that’s correctable. That’s not harming anyone else.”

Sorsby could be highly sought after in the supplemental draft. Especially if NFL teams think he won’t be a repeat offender.

In the supplemental draft, NFL teams will bid using 2027 draft capital for the right to acquire players. Whichever team makes the best bid wins. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport suggested that Sorsby could land a second-round pick price tag.

It will be fascinating to see if a team ends up taking a shot on Sorsby.
