Analysis from David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard highlights the team’s financial strategy, noting that keeping Aiyuk on the Left Squad list has no financial repercussions since they are not required to pay him. In fact, maintaining this status quo prevents a significant portion of his $120 million extension from counting against the salary cap.
This ongoing situation has led to an outburst from Aiyuk on social media, where he publicly accused the organization of being too scared to release him while hinting at a desire to move to the Washington Commanders. However, his outspoken attempts to force a trade have raised concerns for potential suitors who might otherwise be interested in acquiring his impressive skill set.
During a recent discussion shared on X by insider JP Finlay, NFL analyst Steve Wyche questioned whether the Commanders or any other team would want to deal with this ongoing drama. Wyche pointed out that the 49ers hold all the leverage in this situation.
“The 49ers tend to handle business in the most professional way. They do have the ability to let him sit there,” Wyche noted, while also highlighting the hidden risk for interested teams: “If you’re another team, why would you ask yourself, ‘Do we really want this kind of distraction?’”
This hesitation was evident in Washington, where team leadership is actively trying to distance itself from the social media circus. When reporters asked Commanders head coach Dan Quinn about Aiyuk’s choice to wear Washington apparel online and a possible reunion with quarterback Jayden Daniels, Quinn dismissed the speculation.
“Not from my understanding, nor do I have a comment about that,” Quinn said, shutting down the line of questioning. “You had to take a shot, I understand.”
