The coaching turnover is on full blast with the New England Patriots as new head coach Mike Vrabel quickly assembles his staff.
Josh McDaniels and Terrell Williams are in as offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator, respectively, while most members of Jerod Mayo’s old staff are looking for new jobs.
It appears former Patriots defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery found one as The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr. reported Wednesday that Montgomery is assuming the same role with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Montgomery isn’t the first Patriots coach from the past season to wind up with the Bengals this offseason. Montgomery will make the trip from New England to Cincinnati with offensive line coach Scott Peters and assistant offensive line coach Michael McCarthy.
Montgomery’s lone season with the Patriots after spending nine seasons with the Green Bay Packers wasn’t successful. New England ranked last in the NFL in sacks with 28 while also allowing the 10th-most rushing yards per game at 131.4.
Vrabel will now be tasked with filling that spot on New England’s staff. It will be the Patriots’ third coach at that position in as many years since DeMarcus Covington held down that role for four seasons before being promoted to defensive coordinator. Covington isn’t expected to return to the Patriots.
