The Dallas Cowboys have demonstrated a willingness to take chances on young quarterbacks with upside as a backup behind Dak Prescott. That’ll be the case once again in 2026 with Joe Milton and Sam Howell, but another option appears to be on the table for next year.
ESPN‘s Todd Archer reported that the Cowboys front office had “high interest” in former Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby when he entered his name into the NFL Supplemental Draft. Even with Sorsby’s gambling addiction and Prescott under contract through 2028, Dallas liked the young quarterback’s physical tools.
Of course, the NFL opted not to hold a Supplemental Draft this summer, and it has required Sorsby to enter the league through the 2027 NFL Draft. This means that he’ll have gone an entire year without playing, an added layer of risk for a prospect who teams already had off-the-field concerns about.
What’s less clear from Archer’s reporting is whether the Cowboys’ interest in Sorsby would’ve resulted in the team actually spending significant draft capital on him. Had he been permitted to enter the Supplemental Draft, NFL teams would’ve bid on the round in which they were willing to select him. The team with the highest bid and priority would’ve then been awarded the young signal-caller.
Before Sorsby’s application was denied, projections on where he would be selected ranged from the second to the fourth round. Dallas does not have a fourth- or fifth-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft to forfeit, so it would have had to commit a third-round bid on Sorsby at a minimum.
The report is something worth keeping in mind next offseason. Prescott turns 33 years old at the end of July, and the Cowboys’ front office has clearly started thinking about its succession plan at quarterback. The 2027 NFL Draft class is viewed as relatively deep at the position, so it’s very possible that Dallas could use a Day 2 pick next year to develop someone behind Prescott.
