After nearly two decades running the show at M&T Bank Park, John Harbaugh has been fired by the Baltimore Ravens following 18 seasons with the team.
The highs were incredible: a Super Bowl win, a Coach of the Year honor, and more road playoff victories than any other coach in NFL history. But after losing too many close games, falling from the premier team in the AFC North to a middle-of-the-pack squad tied up with similar middle-of-the-pack teams like Mike Tomlin’s Pittsburgh Steelers, the Ravens decided they needed a change, and just like that, Harbaugh hit the free agent market.
Fortunately for Harbaugh, it sure doesn’t sound like he’s going to be unemployed for long. According to ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Harbaugh’s agent has already been contacted by seven teams about his future, which, considering there are only seven openings, including the Ravens, says a lot about his standing around the league.
“In the first 45 minutes after John Harbaugh was fired this afternoon, his agent Bryan Harlan said he received calls from seven NFL teams expressing interest in his client,” Schefter wrote. “There currently are seven NFL head coach openings, including Baltimore’s.”
So how did seven teams reach out to Harbaugh when there are only six jobs open around the NFL outside of Baltimore? Well, considering some, like NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, have reported that teams that already have head coaches under contract could view Harbaugh as a better option heading into the future, it sure sounds like he will have his pick of the litter when it comes to his new landing spot.
Did the Ravens make the right decision in firing Harbaugh? Only time will tell, but considering more teams are interested in his services than there are available job openings, it sure seems like Baltimore made a risky play saying goodbye to one of the top coaches in the NFL.
