Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin sat out mandatory minicamp in hopes of landing a new multi-year extension from the team. While the two sides don’t appear to be in a great place right now, there’s hope on the horizon for all parties.
James Palmer of Bleacher Report shared in his “NFL Insider Notebook” that while McLaurin is currently holding out, he has spent time before minicamp with the team and hung around coach Dan Quinn. While it’s in a “difficult spot” right now in terms of negotiations, there’s an expectation that things will get worked out.
“I do think this is one that will work itself out…Adam Peters and Dan Quinn are both very aware of what Terry McLaurin did for Jayden Daniels…There’s not a lot of panic, even though it’s not in a great spot right now. They have the ability to, maybe, get something done before training camp.”

In terms of what an extension might cost, Palmer said that his “sense” would be a deal in the $30 million per year range. It would make him one of the highest-paid NFL players at his position, with the D.K. Metcalf contract perhaps offering a comparable deal for McLaurin.
McLaurin produced four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons from 2020-2023 despite poor quarterback play in Washington. Upon the arrival of Jayden Daniels, the veteran wide receiver set career-highs in touchdowns(13), catch rate (70.1 percent) and tied his personal-best for first downs (56).

Not only is McLaurin a two-time Pro Bowl selection coming off a season that saw him earn second-team All-Pro honors, but he’s also a leader in the locker room and beloved by the coaching staff. Given his outstanding rapport with Daniels, an extension is in everyone’s best interests.
Considering that McLaurin is eligible for NFL free agency next offseason, there’s added incentive for Washington to get a deal done. While the Commanders’ receiver might receive just under the four-year, $132 million extension that Metcalf received, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he gets a multi-year deal in July worth around $32 million per year.
