It only took until Week 7 for the NFL to add more commercials to their RedZone channel after initially saying there would only be four 15-second ads added to the seven-hour weekly show. This development only served to further infuriate fans who were already angry that the league ended 16 years of “commercial-free football” on the channel.
One of the reasons NFL fans were initially concerned with commercials being added to NFL RedZone – allowing any ads at all on the show opens the door to the channel becoming inundated with commercials – came true on Sunday. The main problem is, as has happened with almost every paid streaming service these days, is that viewers are already paying a premium to watch the channel, so why should they be subject to ads?
“Commercials were noticeably more frequent on today’s RedZone channel, as the NFL has taken a product that fans could once turn on and enjoy nothing but football all day Sunday and turned it into a product that is riddled with commercial interruptions,” Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk wrote Sunday night.
As he also pointed out, commercials during an NFL game are accepted by football fans because of the natural breaks during each game. Plus, it’s always been that way. The RedZone channel, on the other hand, was appealing to many fans because host Scott Hanson, for 16 years, would avoid much of that down time and ALL of the commercials. No more.
The addition of more commercials than was initially promised on the NFL RedZone channel on Sunday did not go unnoticed by a slew of fans either.
“Never thought redzone commercials would bother me,” one NFL wrote on X. “I’m gonna stab someone.”
“WAYYYY TOO MANY COMMERCIALS!!! #redzone,” someone else complained, echoing many others.
“@ScottHanson can you please turn off the commercials on the Redzone channel? I shouldn’t have to watch commercials if I pay for a service,” read another comment that was shared by many.
“I’ve had NFL+ for a while now, and I just want to say great job putting commercials in RedZone. I canceled my subscription,” another viewer wrote.
This change also, as one fan pointed out, blew the door wide open for another change to potentially take place. It too is one that TV viewers have been forced to experience with other paid streaming services.
Redzone+ incoming. Pay even more of a premium for no commercials while ‘regular’ RedZone will continue to add commercials while still charging a lesser premium
