Garrett, arguably the NFL’s best pass rusher, wants out of Cleveland.
One of the NFL’s best players wants to play for a new team.
Cleveland Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett got the NFL world buzzing early Monday with his public trade request.
Here’s his full statement, sent out to seemingly every NFL insider on the planet:
As a kid dreaming of the NFL, all I focused on was the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl - and that goal fuels me today more than ever. My love for the community of Northeast Ohio and the incredible fanbase of the Cleveland Browns has made this one of the toughest decisions of my life. These past eight years have shaped me into the man that I am today.
While I’ve loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won’t allow me to be complacent. The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl.
With that in mind, I have requested to be traded from the Cleveland Browns.
Garrett finished second in sacks with 14 and is on his way to Canton at this rate. The only time in his eight-year career he’s failed to record at least 10 sacks in a season was his rookie campaign.
Nearly five years ago, there was an absolute scallywag of a Reddit poster who stirred up a fake story about the Seattle Seahawks trading for Cleveland Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett.
Well guess what? Garrett isn’t coming to the Seahawks (yet), but he’s just requested a trade out of Cleveland.
Browns GM Andrew Berry said at last week’s Senior Bowl that he’s not parting ways with Garrett even if a team offers him multiple first-rounders.
He was asked specifically, “If someone sees you at dinner tonight and says, ‘We’ll give you two ones for Myles,’ do you say, ‘I’m not interested?’”
“Correct,” he said. “You can put that on the record.”
The 29-year-old Garrett is under contract through 2026 on a $25 million/year deal. He’s one of the highest paid edge rushers in the NFL but the San Francisco 49ers’ Nick Bosa tops the list at $34 million/year. It’s highly likely that Garrett would want an extension that would be in the neighborhood of Bosa’s contract, so any team looking to trade for him would need to think about draft picks + market-setting deal.
There’s almost on chance Garrett ends up in Seattle but we’ll do a poll anyway.
