Dianna Russini dropped the latest gossip surrounding Garrett and the Browns on the Rich Eisen Show.
Things have quieted down for the Cleveland Browns on the Myles Garrett front over the last week. Garrett and his team have said little since his media tour during the week of the Super Bowl.
Garrett has made it clear that he will do whatever he needs to see his exit in Cleveland. Our own Jared Mueller wrote about a possible scenario that another big Cleveland athlete used as a strategy to force a trade.
It’s safe to assume that teams have been reaching out to Cleveland to inquire about his availability, and an NFL insider confirmed that today. Senior NFL Insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic said that the Browns have received calls from the NFC and AFC over the past few weeks during her appearance on the Richard Eisen Show earlier today.
When asked about Garrett, Russini answered: “I expect that to pick up, actually, over the next week or two, knowing that Myles Garrett’s agent is going to be at the combine talking to teams.”
She wondered out loud at one point if the Browns would handle it similarly to the way the Houston Texans did when they traded away Deshaun Watson. The Texans auctioned off Watson by getting everyone’s best and final offers.
The most interesting thing to note is that she said the Browns have told everyone that they aren’t trading Garrett with one added caveat- “for now”. She also said that the Browns were going out of their way to make it known that they weren’t going to trade Garrett when the news of his request went public.
That last part is of interest to me because no GM would ever want to be known as the guy who traded away the future Hall of Fame edge rusher. From a public relations standpoint, you’d want it to be clear that you were forced to do so.
What do you think? Is the “for now” a change of the Browns’ thinking? Do you think a deal happens at the beginning of free agency? Let us know in the comments below.
